Gary Neville v Gary Lineker: king of the football podcasters?
Gary Neville is a director of around 89 companies, spanning property, hotels, a university, a football club and a media group. Gary Lineker is a director of eight, only one of which really trades. Yet that single company, Goalhanger, is the podcast powerhouse of the pair. The busiest man on the register does not own the crown; the quietest one does. Here is what Companies House shows about two very different ways to build.
The footprintTwo names, two very different registers
Turnover is not disclosed for most of these companies, so this is a comparison of structure rather than sales: how many businesses each man is tied to, how many still trade, and how much of it is genuinely his.
Company counts include entities each man is a current director or person of significant control of; many of Neville's are holding and property vehicles within larger groups. Lineker's eight exclude one property company he resigned from in 2024.
Five things the filings show
- The quiet man owns the crown. Lineker's Goalhanger is comfortably the largest single business across the two, on staff, cash and growth, and he built it with just two co-founders.
- Neville is a builder of businesses. Some 89 companies across property, football, education, hospitality, media and engineering, most of them holding and development vehicles.
- Much of Neville's domain is other people's capital. KKR stands behind the St Michael's tower, long-time backer Peter Lim behind the hotels, and his football-media has just been folded into Miroma and Global Studios.
- What is purely his is the property. The Relentless companies, a cluster of Manchester buildings bought with his own capital, are the part he owns outright.
- Lineker travels light. One trading company, no bank debt on it, and a handful of dormant film-partnership memberships from the 2000s.
Question 01Why does the least busy man own the crown?
Because he did one thing and kept it. Goalhanger, the company behind Britain's best-known history and football podcasts, is on the filings the standout business of the pair. Turnover is not disclosed, so we describe it by shape rather than a headline number: 34 staff with headcount more than doubling in a year, around £7m of cash, £5m of net assets and rising. Lineker owns it alongside two co-founders, with no private equity and no corporate parent. It is a focused, cash-generative, founder-owned business, and it is the whole of his corporate life bar a few dormant shells.

Owners: Lineker and two co-founders, no outside investor
Neville has genuine football-media of his own, The Overlap and, through it, The United Stand and Buzz 16 Productions, and they are growing quickly; The Overlap's headcount has jumped from a handful to 18. But in December 2025 that whole cluster was rolled into the larger media groups Miroma and Global Studios, so it now sits beneath investors rather than standing alone, and its scale will show in next year's group filings rather than these. On today's record, the podcast crown belongs to the man who owns just the one company.
Question 02What does each man's domain actually look like?
This is the heart of it. Lineker's map is almost empty: one bright company, a couple of dormant ones. Neville's is a dense field spread across six sectors, colour-coded below by activity and tagged by who really holds the capital, his own, co-owned, or backed by an outside investor. It is a portrait of two temperaments as much as two balance sheets.
Question 03So what does Neville actually own?
Being a director of 89 companies is not the same as owning 89 companies, and Neville's map is a good lesson in the difference. Strip out the vehicles where the real capital belongs to someone else and a clear, genuinely-his business remains: Manchester property.
Genuinely his
Own capital- The Relentless property estate
- A cluster of freehold Manchester buildings, the St John Street row, St Andrew's Chambers and others, held through the Relentless companies he owns with his family. Roughly £8m of disclosed purchases, financed by commercial lenders.
- Salford City, via Class of 92
- Held with his fellow former players. A labour of love more than a profit centre: the club carries around −£21m of net liabilities, funded by shareholder loans.
Backed by others
Real capital elsewhere- The St Michael's tower
- The landmark Manchester scheme sits under a structure in which the private-equity firm KKR holds significant influence, with around £89m of borrowings in one holding company.
- Hotels and football-media
- The hotels trace to long-time backer Peter Lim; The Overlap and its sister channels were folded into the media groups Miroma and Global Studios in December 2025.
Project 92, the company above Salford City, shows a headline profit of about £27m. This is not trading profit; it reflects a one-off, non-cash write-back relating to Salford City loans, and is best read as an accounting entry rather than money earned.
Question 04Audio against bricks
The two men even borrow differently, and it captures the contrast neatly. Lineker's Goalhanger carries no bank debt at all; it funds itself from what it earns. Neville's most substantial own-capital activity, the Relentless property estate, runs the other way, secured on Manchester bricks and mortar.
Secured on Manchester property
- Freehold charges over 17, 21 and 23 St John Street and St Andrew's Chambers, Albert Square
- Development charges over the Bootle Street and St Mary's Parsonage sites
- The Stock Exchange Hotel, latterly refinanced through a Malta-based lender before its sale
No debt to speak of
- Goalhanger holds around £7m of cash and no registered bank charges
- Growth funded from trading, not borrowing
- A classic founder-owned, cash-generative model
A word on the film partnerships
For completeness, Lineker's few other corporate entries are memberships of several film partnerships, Ingenious Film Partners and Inside Track. These were film-investment schemes used by many public figures in the 2000s that HMRC later challenged as tax avoidance, with the courts broadly siding with HMRC; Lineker was one member among hundreds. They are dormant today and separate from his own companies.

Turnover is not disclosed in these filings, so no revenue figures are quoted. Many of Neville's companies are holding and development vehicles within larger groups; "control" shows where the ultimate capital or influence sits, from the register of persons with significant control.
MethodologyHow this was compiled
Spark Intel links companies to individuals through Companies House officer and control records, and attaches the latest filed financials, charges and ownership for each entity.
- Turnover
- Not disclosed for the great majority of these companies, which file small-company or abridged accounts. Where the register held no turnover, none is quoted; the piece relies on cash, net assets, staff and headcount growth instead.
- Company counts
- Entities each man is a current director or person of significant control of, including holding and property vehicles. Companies a person has resigned from, or a foundation left many years ago, are excluded.
- Ownership and control
- From the person-with-significant-control register and direct-owner records, showing where ultimate capital or influence sits rather than day-to-day management.
- Project 92
- Its headline profit reflects a one-off, non-cash write-back relating to Salford City loans, not trading profit, and is described as such.
- Recent restructuring
- The Overlap and related media companies were reorganised under Miroma and Global Studios in December 2025; their combined scale will appear in later group filings.
Common questionsThe two Garys and their businesses
Who owns Goalhanger?
Gary Lineker owns Goalhanger Podcasts with two co-founders. On the filings it is the largest single business across the two men by staff, cash and growth, holding around £7m of cash with 34 staff and no outside investor.
How many companies is Gary Neville involved in?
Around 89 as a director or person of significant control, of which about 70 are still active. They span property, football, education, hospitality, media and engineering, though many are holding and development vehicles within larger groups.
Does Gary Neville own everything he runs?
No, and that is part of the story. The genuinely-his part is the Relentless Manchester property estate. The St Michael's tower is backed by the private-equity firm KKR, the hotels by long-time backer Peter Lim, and his football-media was folded into Miroma and Global Studios in December 2025.
What is the £27m profit at Project 92?
It is a one-off, non-cash accounting write-back relating to Salford City loans, not money the business earned by trading. Salford City itself carries around £21m of net liabilities.
What are the Ingenious and Inside Track partnerships?
Dormant film-investment schemes from the 2000s that many public figures joined and that HMRC later challenged as tax avoidance, with the courts broadly siding with HMRC. Lineker was one member among hundreds; they are separate from his own companies.
