Northampton's Books Were Champion Form, Their League Form Wasn't

The reigning Premiership champions fell to 8th in the table this season, yet posted the smallest loss and strongest cash position of any club in this dataset.

In the 2024-25 season covered by these accounts, Northampton Saints arrived as defending Premiership champions but slipped to 8th in the table with 44 points, dropping out of the play-off picture entirely. Their season was rescued, spectacularly, in Europe: a 37-34 win away at Leinster sent them to the Champions Cup final, where they lost 20-28 to Bordeaux Begles in Cardiff, their first Champions Cup final appearance since 2011.

The accounts show a club whose finances stayed remarkably disciplined even as the league form dipped. Turnover held at around £22m, and the pre-tax loss of close to £1.5m is the smallest of any club in this dataset by some distance. Cash in the bank stood at around £4m, the strongest cash position of any Premiership club here, and net assets of roughly plus £14m put Northampton among only a handful of clubs with a genuinely positive balance sheet.

Staff costs of around £13m funded a squad still capable of taking a game to Leinster in Dublin, even if consistency deserted them domestically. There is no single marquee signing driving this year's numbers; it looks more like a club whose overall financial discipline, built up during the title-winning years, gave it room to absorb a disappointing league campaign without the balance sheet suffering.

For a club that went from parading the Premiership trophy to missing the play-offs in twelve months, the accounts are the more reassuring half of the story.

TakeawayNorthampton's league form collapsed and their European run nearly delivered a stunning final win, but their finances, the smallest loss and one of the strongest cash piles in the Premiership, never wavered.
