Sheffield Wednesday Were Bottom of the Championship for Months. Danny Röhl Pulled Off the Great Escape

A club marooned at the foot of the table for half a season somehow avoided relegation. These accounts cover the year it happened.

These accounts cover the 2023-24 season, in which Sheffield Wednesday spent much of the campaign bottom of the Championship before Danny Rohl, appointed as head coach in October 2023, engineered one of the division's most dramatic survivals, securing safety on the final day.

Turnover grew by around 36% to close to £26m, and a pre-tax loss of around £10m for the period reflects a squad rebuilt under Rohl during the season to fight off relegation, a task that looked all but hopeless for long stretches of the campaign.

Net assets remain deeply in deficit at around £80m, a legacy of owner Dejphon Chansiri's years of funding losses at Hillsborough, a debt position that would resurface far more seriously in the seasons that followed this filing.

Staff costs of around £22m against turnover of £26m show a wage bill that, while significant, was not the primary driver of the club's troubles that season, with the survival battle owing more to results on the pitch than any particular financial extravagance.

The Great Escape captured the imagination of English football that season. These accounts, filed not long after, gave little hint of the far deeper financial crisis that would engulf the club within two years.

Sheffield Wednesday were relegated from the Championship at the end of the 2025-26 season after severe financial problems, including repeated points deductions, and finished bottom of the division with zero points on the final table.

Sheffield Wednesday's great escape in 2023-24 was a footballing triumph. Within two years, the financial pressures behind it caught up with the club in the most brutal way possible.
